The Oilers for quite some time now have alerted teams around the league that they wanted to shred some salary. This was absolutely no secret, anybody following this story, saw a trade in the cards. The Islanders have been linked with Eberle before, so it was a smart guess the trade today was a true possibility.
From Edmonton's point of view, they take a hit in proven NHL talent. Eberle is a proven yearly 20+ goal scorer in this league, not easy to come by. On the positive though, Strome is a young forward with offensive potential. Being as Islander fan, his play elevated when Doug Weight took over coaching responsibilities. He could fit very well in an explosive Oiler attack.
Islanders have been looking for top 6 talent and they land just that in Eberle. Tavares and Eberle played back with team Canada and can easily find themselves line-mates once again. Losing Strome who was inconsistent throughout his tenure can easily be replaced on the Islander roster with rookies Josh Ho-Sang and Matthew Barzal hoping to both make the opening lineup. The current roster is very deep and could possibly see more changes on the way.
Overall, this is a win for the Islanders. Oilers do accomplish their goal in shredding salary with hopes of sureing up the backend. The Isles land a right wing who can play and blend with Tavares.
With reports coming from any and every outlet, look for the Isles to be once again busy in the trade market. Travis Hamonic name has been mentioned everywhere you look. A logical trade could possibly be Hamonic and ____________ for a number two center. Finding someone down the middle to support Tavares is one of Garth Snows missions. Everyone is screaming Matt Duchene and rightfully so, but the Avs asking price is ridicuously high at the moment it appears. My guess is that the Islanders look elsewhere, possibly trying to get creative. Get ready for round two tomorrow!
